About
My background is in circus and physical theatre, and over the last 20 years I’ve worked across performance, writing, directing, producing and teaching. That experience gave me a strong sense of how performance is made: the energy of a rehearsal room, the rhythm of a live production, and the visual details that help define a show.
That background continues to shape the way I work as a photographer. I’m interested in visual storytelling: images that capture atmosphere, emotion and character, whether in rehearsal or on stage. A photograph can hold a moment of drama, humour or tension in a single frame, but it can also suggest something larger. The feeling of being in the room, the relationship between performers, or the visual world a production creates.
Theatre photography is about more than just making pretty pictures. It plays a crucial role in your marketing campaign.
Production images need to communicate the look and feel of a show clearly, while rehearsal photographs can do more than simply document the process. They can capture the concentration, play, surprise and intensity that go into making new work. Publicity and press images need to be engaging, distinctive, and ready to support marketing, listings, and wider coverage.
My aim is always to create photographs that feel alive, truthful to the work, and useful to the people making and presenting it. I work closely with directors, producers and marketing teams to create images that reflect what is distinctive about a production, from performance and atmosphere to design, costume, light and space.
Some projects are one-off commissions, while others grow into ongoing collaborations over time. I value that continuity, and the understanding that comes from returning to work with the same organisation across different productions, rehearsal periods or projects.
My photographs have been featured in publications including The Stage, The Guardian, The Times, The Telegraph and The New York Times, and I have worked with organisations including Bristol Hippodrome, The Almeida Theatre, Ambassadors Theatre Group, Exeter Northcott, Selladoor Productions, Lamda, and Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.
